HerSpace releases trauma-informed modern slavery resources to support safer, more effective responses

HerSpace has published a new suite of trauma-informed resources to support people and organisations responding to modern slavery in Australia. Funded by the Australian Government, the resources are designed to support safe, ethical and effective engagement with people who have experienced exploitation, coercion and trauma.

HerSpace Chair, Ms Abby Kempe, said:

“At the heart of this project is a simple principle: responses to modern slavery must prioritise safety, dignity and recovery. These resources reflect the insights of survivors, counsellors and sector partners, and translate trauma-informed care into practical tools that organisations and practitioners can use with confidence.”

Developed through consultation and informed by lived experience, the resources bring together established trauma theory, survivor insights and practice-based experience. They support the translation of trauma-informed care from principle into practical action across frontline practice, organisational settings and systems.

The suite builds on the earlier publication of the Trauma-Informed Practice: A National Guide for Modern Slavery Response and Survivor Care, which has already been positively received across the sector. Together, the Guide, self-paced training, fact sheets, survivor brochure and interactive Padlets provide a connected set of tools to support prevention, response, recovery and empowerment.

Rather than replacing existing legal, regulatory or professional frameworks, the resources are designed to complement them — supporting consistency, reducing the risk of harm or re-traumatisation, and strengthening referral and support pathways.

Ms Kempe added:

“This project represents a collaborative effort across survivors, practitioners and sector partners to strengthen how Australia responds to modern slavery. By bringing together trauma theory, lived experience and practical tools, these resources help ensure responses are not only compliant, but compassionate, consistent and effective.”

All resources are available on the HerSpace website.
