HerSpace honours two remarkable leaders

HerSpace is proud to recognise and farewell two exceptional leaders whose vision, commitment, and expertise have profoundly shaped our organisation and the national response to supporting women recovering from exploitation and modern slavery.

Catherine Cooney joined the HerSpace Board in 2018, first serving as Chair and later continuing as a Director. Her leadership during critical years strengthened our governance and advocacy, ensuring HerSpace remained a trusted voice in shaping best-practice responses for survivors. Catherine’s expertise in program development and evidence-based practice has left an enduring mark on our approach to care.

Vicki Schuhardt began as Treasurer and Director in 2019 before stepping into the role of Chair. Vicki brought exceptional governance and financial stewardship, guiding HerSpace through growth and sustainability. Her passion for women’s rights and trauma-informed care has been central to advancing our strategic vision.

Together, Vicki and Catherine played a pivotal role in developing “Trauma-Informed Practice: A National Guide for Modern Slavery Response and Survivor Care”—a landmark resource funded by the Australian Government. This guide translates trauma-informed principles into practical tools for frontline workers, service designers and policy makers, ensuring survivor care is safe, empowering and consistent across Australia.

With deep gratitude

The HerSpace community extends its heartfelt thanks to Vicki and Catherine for their extraordinary service, leadership and lasting contributions. Their contributions will continue to influence policy, practice and lives for many years to come.

Please join us in celebrating their achievements and wishing them every success in the next chapter of their journey.
